Central Andes Peru - Nevado Salkantay - Santa Teresa - Machu Picchu

Introduction

Qinti One! is a carefully designed program which takes you from the central Andes of Chonta to the base of the wonderful snow-capped Salkantay mountain, through lush cloud-forest all the way to the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu.

It is a combination of acclimatizing hikes, Andean wildlife, incredible landscape, leisure and community interaction. Our glamping sites  include beautiful tents with comfortable beds and bedding, private bathrooms and hot water showers,  high quality food and service.

Qinti One! is designed as a slow paced hike which covers 10-15 km every day.   The more challenging hike across the Salkantay pass is assisted by mules and horses and given the high elevation we offer the possibility to ride on a horse to reach the highest part of the pass.

Day Itinerary

Cusco- Condors of the Apurimac in Chonta

Depart from Cusco at  8 am. After leaving Cusco, the drive takes you trough small villages and finally winding up to an elevation of 3550 m  to the  Chonta village.  After check-in and  lunch we take a soft hike to the Condor view point located overlooking the amazing Apurimac canyon.   From here we can observe the majestic condors rise from the depth of the valley.   We enjoy the changing light in the never ending mountains in front of us. At 5 pm we hike back for an hour to our Camp where a sundowner and a cozy camp fire is waiting for us. After dinner we enjoy stargazing from the Campground.

Overnight: Chonta Mirador de Cóndores

Chonta Mirador de Cóndores enjoys a prime location above the canyon of Apurimac. This lookout point is an excellent place for those to admire the Andean Condor, a large native bird, as it soars around in its natural habitat. Historically, the Incas considered the Andean Condor a sacred bird that brings a spiritual message. Visitors to the area will also spot eagles, hawks and hummingbirds, among others.

Day Itinerary

We start the day  early enjoying the incredible sunrise around us. Breakfast is in the open with high quality Peruvian coffee, fresh fruit and orange juice, a choice of eggs and local bread and jellies.  After breakfast a local family will host you to visit their home and help harvest and prepare the potatoes and herbs for the Pachamanca lunch, that we will share with the community members. Pachamanca is a local way to prepare food. A large hole is filled with hot rocks and the potatoes, corn and meat. Everything is then covered up for 2 hours and slow cooked until tender. Sharing this experience with local community members is a fantastic opportunity to learn more about life in the Andes.

After lunch we have the choice of a local hike to a small lake or relax by your porch and enjoy the wonderful light and puffy clouds that continuously form along the Vilcabamba mountain range in from of us. Sunset and sundowner by the campfire, followed by dinner.

Day 3

Soraypampa, Nevado Salkantay
Day 3 image

Nevado Salkantay

The highest peak in the Peruvian Andes’ Vilcabamba mountain range, Salkantay is famous for its proximity to Machu Picchu and its incredible alternative trekking route to the ancient site. To take the route known as the Salkantay Trek, hikers begin at Cusco and make their way through a snowy mountain pass before descending into lush jungle, and then arriving at the most sought after destination in South America. This alternative has many advantages, such as its significantly lower number of hikers, a quick and easy booking process (it is even possible to book on the day), and even arguably better scenery. The trail includes an option to pass the exquisite bright blue Humantay Lagoon, and the wonderful rock-sculpted thermal pools known by many as the best on the continent, with spectacular views of the mountains.

activity icon

Day Itinerary

Morning departure from Chonta at 6 am  to reach Soraypampa (3980 M) towards noon. Non paved road for most of the way. Lunch at Soraypampa. After lunch a nice acclimatisation hike up to the turquoise blue Laguna Humantay at 4200 meters. Plenty of time to stop and admire the beautiful scenery, before reaching the camp back on the meadows of Soraypampa.

Lunch and time to admire the scenery of the massive glaciers and the shining white ice towers of Mount Salkantay, at 6271 Meters the high est peak in the Vilcabamba mountain-range. Witnessing the grandeur of the scenery, the hard breathing uphill hike is fast forgotten. Day 5 image

Santa Teresa

On the edge of the jungle of Cusco, in the high mountains of the Southern Sierra, Santa Teresa is superbly situated on the bank of the Urubamba or Vilcanota River, northwest of the world-renowned Machu Picchu. The quaint small town in the province of La Convención offers various tourist services, such as lodgings, restaurants, bars, and camping sites, and an alternative route to the iconic archaeological ruin, the Inca trails, Choquequirao, and other tours in Cusco. Additionally, the natural terrain of Santa Teresa is perfect for outdoor adventures such as hiking, rafting, kayaking, and zip-lining. After hours of such rigorous activity, end the day with a soothing soak at the Santa Teresa hot springs, an inviting thermal complex perched at an altitude of 1600 metres above sea level. Immerse yourself in the pools surrounded by plunging green valleys while you contemplate the magnificent natural scenery.

activity icon

Day Itinerary

After breakfast we start our hike down to the Santa Teresa valley. There is an amazing abrupt change from the high alpine meadows into the lushness of the cloud forest. There is an instant change in temperature, as we follow the Wamantay river downwards, either side age old cloud forests with moss laden trees, chirping birds and the song of the water. After about 3 hours we reach Challhuay (2800m), where our private transport awaits us. The road follows the beautiful Santa Teresa river valley to Lucmabamba. We stop at a coffee plantation for a coffee roasting demonstrating and tasting  and a lunch. After lunch we drive to Santa Teresa (1500m). Evening bath in the hot springs of Cocalmayo.

Day 6

El Mapi ByInkaterra, Machu Picchu
Day 6 image

Machu Picchu

Located more than 6000 feet above sea level in Peru's mountain peaks, Machu Picchu is one of the world's most impressive archaeological sites. This legendary lofty city was abandoned by the Inca Empire, reclaimed by the jungle and lost to humanity until its rediscovery in 1911. Built by the Incas on the summit of "Machu Picchu" (Old Peak), in the middle of a tropical montane forest overlooking the canyon of the Urubamba, the 'Lost City of Machu Picchu' is a site of extraordinary beauty and enormous archaeological significance. The complex reflects the Inca Empire at its height, with giant walls, terraces and ramps that appear to have been cut naturally in the continuous rock escarpments. The phenomenal technological skills of the Incan engineers can be seen in multiple facets of the site: the exacting precision of the massive stone buildings, the water channels that reveal a deep understanding of hydraulics, and Intihuatana, a carved ritual stone known as the "hitching post of the Sun", which served as a solar calendar that regulated planting and harvesting.

Travel Information

Peru is most famous for the sacred archaeological site of Machu Picchu – visited each year by scores of intrepid hikers who brave the Inca Trail’s arduous slopes to explore the age-old ruins. The country’s attractions extend far beyond the mystical allure of this legendary location and include palm-fringed beaches, quaint Andean villages and archaeological treasures that predate Machu Picchu by hundreds of years – all imbued with the nation’s rich melange of indigenous and colonial cultures. Equally enticing are the exotic reaches of Peru’s Amazon rainforest; Lima’s superb eateries, exquisite architecture and effervescent nightlife; the glittering, mountain-ringed waters of Lake Titicaca; and the vibrant city of Cusco, referred to by the Incas as ‘the centre of the world’.
